“Is this wine any good?”
Do you ever ask yourself this question?
You’re standing in front of a wine rack at a liquor store. There are hundreds of wines to choose from.
You’re not a connoisseur so it can be a little intimidating.
You might think you don’t a have a palate so from one wine to the next it doesn’t make a difference. Totally untrue.
The fact is there are too many options to choose from. How do you pick the best wine for your budget?
When shopping for wine most people commit three mistakes. When they do, they are actually leaving money on the table. Let’s go over them.
Mistake #1: Do you pick the “safe bet?”
Let’s face it. You’re a little fearful that if you pick that 90-point bottle you’ve never tasted before, it might suck. It’s really a hit or miss game, right? Sometimes you pick a yummy wine and sometimes you’re disappointed. It’s the luck of the draw.
Sometimes you don’t feel like being adventurous. So you go with the ‘safe bet.’
That could be a wine you already know is good. You’ve already bought it and like it.
Another safe bet is going with a popular name like Cabernet or Pinot Noir. Those are familiar names everyone knows.
There’s a problem with the “safe bet” option. You’ll never elevate your wine experience. You instinctively know there are better wines out there. Why cheat yourself out of finding your new favorite wine?
Mistake #2: Sexy Label
Do you pick a wine because the label is attractive to your eye? Some people like colorful labels. Some like old-looking labels. Some people like to see catchy words on the label like “cupcake.”
If you pick wines because the label looks cool, you’re leaving money on the table. Never judge a wine by its label. You’ll get ripped off.
Mistake #3: Price is King
Do you pick a wine because the price is right?
You buy different wines for different reasons. When you buy a gift for a friend, the price you pay for that wine will depend on the value of that friendship.
If the friend is at the low end of the totem pole, you’ll buy a cheap wine. If the friend doesn’t know about wine, you’ll definitely buy a cheap bottle.
If you’re trying to impress your friend, then you’ll probably spend more.
If you have a passion for wine, you treat yourself to an expensive bottle on the weekend.
If you’re looking to a buy a “thank you wine” for a valued client, you’re really going spend more on the wine, right?
Here’s the mistake you’re making.
Your value scale has no basis.
High Price = High Value is WRONG.
Whether you buy cheap or expensive, picking a wine based on price means you’re not getting your money’s worth.
Here’s why you commit these three mistakes.
You’re trying to turn a chaotic situation (finding a great wine at a great price) into a simple task.
It’s human nature to look for shortcuts. Later I’ll show you a better shortcut. It’s going to quickly and easily help you find high-end wines at affordable prices.
